Hollyhock Cottage is a spacious and comfortable gite on child-friendly site in charming rural hamlet near the villages of Vandré a charming hamlet in the Charente Maritime and Genouillé. 10 minutes south of the market town of Surgeres and is surrounded by sunflowers, cornfields and wild hedgerows in gently undulating countryside. The area has its own micro-climate, giving it almost as many sunshine hours as the Mediterranean resorts in the south of France. A detached, spacious, single-storey property and as there are no stairs the cottage is ideal for families with toddlers; similarly, it might be suitable for people with minor handicaps.

The kitchen. The kitchen is part of the large dining room and the fitted kitchen area is well-equipped with washing-machine, fridge, full-size gas cooker, microwave, iron/ironing board, toaster, iron and ironing board plus all crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils.
Living area is through an oak-beamed arch from dining area. A light and spacious room with French doors leading into garden. Furnishings include a three seater sofa, two armchairs and coffee table and the original stone fireplace. English Sat. TV giving access to BBC TV and radio (including children's programs) and a DVD player - you might like to bring your own DVDs for the children or evening entertainment.
Bedrooms. FAMILY BEDROOM: This room has a beautiful outlook. It has an en-suite WC and hand basin and has a double bed, wall reading light, 2 bunk beds plus a cot. Furnishings also include fitted clothes storage, chest of drawers, bedside tables, chair and portable fan. SECOND BEDROOM: Pretty room with two windows overlooking garden and fields. This bedroom has 2 single beds with reading lights, bedside table, chair, fitted clothes storage and ceiling fan.
Bathroom and Toilets.. Light and airy bathroom with bath, shower, WC and hand basin.
Garden and outdoor facilities. In front of the property there is a garden, with rustic seating, ideal for catching the morning sun and in the garden there is a pergola to provide shade, The French doors lead to a peaceful garden where you will find patio furniture and sun loungers at the rear for relaxation and BBq's. The evening sunsets provide a perfect backdrop for barbecues and leisurely drinks. There are play areas and swings and the grassed garden surrounding the property. Play Table tennis in the covered barn and there is a selection of tots' toys for garden play available on request. Small paddling pool available on request and there is ample car parking space.
Miscellaneous. La Lemière is peaceful and very safe for children with no through traffic. Should you require a Playpen or Highchair just let us know.. Bike hire is available at £1 per day or £4 pw. Linen and Towels can be provided at a small fee.
Location. Vandré has a baker, butcher, bar/tabac, post office and open-air swimming pool. There is a very pretty fishing lake in Genouillé, which also has a butcher, bar/tabac and post office. The flourishing and picturesque market town of Surgères (10 mins) is well provided with all the usual amenities, including market, good restaurants, pavement cafes, supermarkets and Sports Complex including large open-air swimming pool. The ferry ports of St Malo 4 1/2 hrs, Caen 5 hrs, Roscoff 5 1/2 hrs, Cherbourg 6 hrs, Calais 7 hrs. The nearest airport is La Rochelle around 30minutes and is served by low cost airlines; Car hire is available at this airport.
Activities. A 30 minute drive will take you La Rochelle a popular and historic town, with its world-famous old port and open-air sea-food cafes boasting some of the best seafood restaurants on the coast. There are many wonderful beaches within 30 minutes, Châtelaillon Plage being the nearest with the finest sand on the Atlantic coast. Visit Cognac with its beautiful shops and restaurants, famous distilleries and vineyards. Surgeres and the nearby village of Vandre offer open-air swimming pools. The picturesque town of St Savinien on the river Charente is a 15 min drive. It has excellent water facilities including an open-air swimming pool with flumes and a lake with sailing boats for hire . Chateau de La Roche-Courbon (25 mins). The Venise Verte (Green Venice) with its wonderful wildlife and waterways. Royan with late night bars, restaurants and casinos and nearby pine forests, surfing beaches and the Palmyre Zoo. The beautiful off-shore islands of Ré and Oléron are well worth the visit, see the Mules wearing pyjamas !! Tennis, Fishing, Golf are all available within short driving distance.

From 2008 it's obligatory to apply a Taxe de Sejour (Tourist Tax) for gites. To cover this £7 per week will be deducted from the security deposit at the end of your stay.
