La Retraite is a traditional Charentaise farmhouse renovated to an exceptionally high standard. It is located in the hamlet of Simoussais, surrounded by fields of sunflowers during the summer months and is just north of the picturesque market town of Surgeres with its choice of bars and restaurants offering everything from good local food to gourmet dining. The beaches of the Atlantic Coast are only a short drive and close to the beautiful Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron and unspoilt town of La Rochelle.

The kitchen. The kitchen/breakfast room incorporates a fully fitted fridge and separate freezer, a glass induction hob, sizeable oven and dishwasher. Kettle, toaster, dish washer, cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer. The kitchen can seat up to seven people and the independent dining room contains a bespoke table which seats ten, there is also an additional sofa here overlooking the garden. The separate laundry room has a washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing board/iron. A welcome pack of provisions will be in the house for your arrival .
Living area. A large lounge with leather sofas and chairs arranged around an original working fireplace (logs provided for winter lets). This room has a quality CD Stereo system and numerous board games. Adjacent is the separate TV room which has a DVD player and Playstation 2 (with a good choice of DVDs and games). English TV and radio are available through the Sky Satellite system .
Bedrooms. 4 large bedrooms, two of which have king size beds. There is a twin bed room and a further bedroom with bunk beds and two single beds. All the bedrooms have shutters and blinds and due to the thick walls are cool even in the height of summer. There are also two cots and two highchairs for your use. All pillows, duvets, bed linen, bath towels, hand towels are provided
Bathroom and Toilets. A large family bathroom incorporating a freestanding bath and separate walk in shower. Two hand basins are set into the tiled unit. There are two further shower rooms, one upstairs and another situated downstairs plus 3 WC's.
Garden and outdoor facilities. A Private garden laid to lawn, gated, fully enclosed and making it extremely safe for young children and here you will find a Swing set. Patio tables and chairs are available in both the front and rear gardens. In the barn there is a large BBq and a number of bicycles for your use. Behind the gates there is hard standing, secure parking for two cars.
Miscellaneous. A babysitting/child minding service is available. There are guide books/tourist information and restaurant recommendations in the upstairs bookcase. Local supermarkets in Mauze and Surgeres are open until 7pm Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9am to 1pm. There are a number of shops including boulangeries, charcuterie and a newsagent selling English newspapers in Mauze just a few minutes drive away
Location. This area boasts the second longest hours of sunshine in France after the Cote D'Azur and summer here seems to stretch from April to October. With over 70 beaches to enjoy you will rarely feel crowded. The ferry ports of St Malo 3 1/2 hrs, Caen 4 hrs, Roscoff 4 1/2 hrs, Cherbourg 5 hrs, Calais 6 hrs. The nearest airport is La Rochelle around 30minutes and is served by low cost airlines; Car hire is available at this airport
Activities. Chatelaillon Plage is a bustling seaside resort and has a vast beach of fine sand that is one of the safest on the coast. The town spends a great deal of its revenue ensuring the 3 km of fine sand is kept in good condition throughout the year. The resort boasts a water complex with giant flume, kids clubs and sailing school and clubs. This is an ideal destination for families with young children. The beachside park with its crazy golf and outdoor theatre is a wonderful place for a holiday. Ile de Re lies just offshore from La Rochelle and is accessible by a toll bridge. The island is 30 km long and is crisscrossed by a 90 km network of cycle tracks which link all the villages passing through pine forests, vineyards, nature reserves and salt marshes. Bicycles can be hired all over the island. Royan is a chic resort with late night bars, restaurants and casinos it has five beaches sheltered from westerly breezes. The 'Grande Conche', the most famous of the beaches is a curving strand with more than 2 km of sand. Each of the five beaches has at least one children's beach club in July and August.
